“Sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.” ―
I said in my haste, all men are liars. Psalm 116:11
“In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”– George Orwell
There are spiritual forces in the world who do not want the truth to be told. The enemy of truth is the devil and his fallen angels. They incite both unbelievers and believers against God’s children and God’s work to suppress the truth. And yes, Satan often uses other believers to accomplish his evil.
There are two spiritual forces in life: God who is truth, and Satan who is a liar. Everything springs from these two opposing spiritual forces: Truth from God and lies from Satan.
We need discernment to be able to determine the truth.
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
One of the most important verses from the bible regarding the truth is :
- Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgement: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. Deuteronomy 32:4
For the word of the Lord is right; and all his works are done in truth. Psalm 33:4
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 18:37
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13
2. Satan And Fallen Angels Are The Enemy of Truth
The devil has waged war against the truth since the Garden of Eden. His main weapon to achieve his aims are lies. The devil and his demons work to deceive mankind and they are very cunning so that at times it’s hard to discern truth from lies.
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Corinthians. 4:4
3. Spiritually Regenerated Christians
When one is spiritually reborn they are given the ability to understand Holy Scripture. They come into a progressive understanding of truth, sin, and lies, as they grow.
“If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.” John 15:19
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. Psalm 51:6
These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates. Zechariah 8:16
I have no greater joy, then to hear that my children walk in truth. 3 John 3:4
4. Non-Spiritually Regenerated
The unregenerate have minds that are blinded by Satan. They may hold some level of morality but their minds are generally darkened as to the nature of sin. It appears that there are degrees of blinding.
For every one that doeth evil, hateth thelight, neither commeth to thelight, lest his deeds should be reproved. John 3:20
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44
“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.” John 3
And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth, That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice: And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out. And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
And she spake unto him according to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out. And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled. And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. Genesis 39
5. Spiritually Regenerated Christians Who Live in Darkness, Carnal Christians, and Those With Unexamined Hearts
While there are many sincere Christians, lying, mischaracterizing, and denial, is rampant. In the church, Christian schools, and on Christian forums. Holding a position within an established Christian institution can prevent the type of soul-searching necessary to ferret out “hidden” sins. Christians somehow delude themselves into thinking that these types of sins are less serious and more respectable than the overt sins that unbelievers practice. But what makes these Christian-committed sins even more insidious is that Christians in leadership positions often blame the victim, thereby multiplying the effects of sin. And there are few things more exasperating than dealing with a sanctimonious, self-righteous, prideful Christian. And be prepared to be persecuted if you tell such a one of his or her sins. They will go so far as to label you a heretic if you attempt to point out their sinning. You will face persecution by Christians and non-Christians for living godly and following the way of truth. And sadly, Christian leaders often get their sycophants to go along with them.
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Timothy 3:12
When one of our children went off to college, I contacted an organization for security on campus. As a spoke with the President he explained how college campuses hide crime on campus. I naively said: “I guess you don’t have that problem with Christian colleges.” He replied: “Actually, Christian colleges are worse because they don’t want to admit there’s a problem.”
His words have remained with me as I’ve navigated the stormy seas of Christian institutions. Nowhere was Christ’s instruction more plain than this parable:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Matthew 23
People have a number of reasons for lying: to protect their own reputation, to harm someone they’re envious of, or to protect their bottom line such as in the following Scripture:
And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying. The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers. And brought them to the magistrates saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city. Acts 16:16
Reasons Why Christians Lie
-Fear of losing money, job, reputation, or to go along with another Christian or Christian leader
No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other: or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. And the Pharisees also, we were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. Luke 16:13
